Human being slowly ascended from lower life forms to what we are today, by a process of natural selection from randomly occurring changes. Each change did prove its worth by surviving the endless battle for existence and this process has gone on for many millions of years.
The Brain is about the size of two clenched fists and weighs about 3 pounds (1.4 kg.) and contains 1000 trillion (that is a very big number!) Protein molecules.
The brain functions by complex nerve cell, circuits. Neurons communicate between themselves through, both electrical and chemical mediums and always travels from the dendrites of a neuron, through its soma, and out its axon to the dendrites of another neuron. One neuron may communicate with thousands of other neurons, and many thousands of neurons are involved with even the simplest behavior.
From the very earliest days of life those cells form new learning connections, or synapses, at the incredible rate of 3 billion a second. It is believed that these connections and their efficiency can be modified, or altered, by experience. Those connections are the key to brain power. No one is using more than a fraction of that amazing ability.
We have four brains in one but on three different levels; called - a triune brain. Top layer (neocortex)- is the thinking part. It is split in to two hemispheres, the right & the left. Middle layer (limbic) – is emotions part - sense of identity, values, & long term memory. The lower layer (reptilian) - is the survival part, controlling all body functions and instincts. The fourth is just shrouded in skull.
Human brain evolved in three main stages.
Its ancient part is the innermost core reptilian brain.
Next evolved the mammalian brain by adding new functions and new ways of controlling the body.
Then evolved the neocortex, the third part of the brain, the Grey matter, the bulk of the brain is divided in two symmetrical hemispheres, separate but communicating. To a considerable extent it is our neocortex which enables us to behave like human beings.
The top layer of the brain consists of two halves, the left and right hemispheres. Each controls different functions and processes information in different ways. These sides are linked by an amazing electronic and chemical relay-system that itself has 300 million operating nerve-cells. This shuttles information around instantly like a multinational automatic telephone exchange.
Amygdala are almond-shaped groups of neurons located deep within the medial temporal lobes of the brain in complex vertebrates.
This is just a brief description of the human brain hardware. As we do experience something of it ourselves and know the other experiences ; we can imagine what immense power is provided to us. Except the incapacitated people each of us possess this hardware and it is capable of the speed mentioned above.
Each of these parts have predesignated functions and enable human being to live as human being, beyond being an animal. As we know these developments took place, over a period of last 4 million years, while seeking a survival by responding to the changing demands – a natural selection process. This is a natural process and expected to continue hereafter also. We know, the present generation is more smart than us, it is the same thing, the brain is learning to respond.
“The neuro science is exploding”, this is how the recent studies are described. Awareness, substantiated by conformity tests, about these capabilities has become available in last decade.
The Owner's Manual of the Brain, by Dr. Pierce Howard, Ph. D, is one of the authentic and exhaustive compilation on the subject for the common man, having no fluency in medical terminology. Based on recent research in psychology, neurobiology, information science, philosophy, anthropology, and linguistics, this updated edition covers how our brain functioning relates to:
The developing brain - birth and childhood
The aging brain
Wellness - sleep, exercise, stress, burnout, diet; music, and humor
Illness - Alzheimer's, ADHD, epilepsy schizophrenia cerebral palsy, addictions; immune system, headaches, and strokes
Mood disorders - depression, anxiety, seasonal affective disorder
Personality and intelligence
Learning and teaching
Creativity and problem solving
Workplace and performance
Sex and Love
There are other resources which, eventually justify the description “Exploding” ; and each of these researches reveal that in our daily lives we hardly use just around 1% of the available capacity, we do not use the supreme powers like subconscious, intuition, imagination and dreams to help us in our struggles against the worldly realities.
As there is hardly a subject matter that is connected with human brain, thinking and powers, it is difficult to say anything about the changes this knowledge can bring in. Suffice it so say, today we hardly educate, teach, learn – how to use our most powerful asset. Without stretching our own brain we can definitely calculate – if with around 1% of usage we are what we are today, what will be the situation if we reach somewhere near 1.5% or 2%.
Just guess, don't imagine, what one can do by using these superior powers and speed while thinking, dreaming and problem solving. I know, my high school teachers telling us ,'we are just taking your near the water, but we can not make you drink it”, it sums up what people with this knowledge must be thinking.
