How do we Learn?

The search of knowledge powers, we dealt with just now, depend on how we use the brain powers. We have seen these powers are equitably provided to each normal human being. The difference between individuals in attaining and using the knowledge power depends upon how the facilities are used by the individuals.

Universally three activities are involved in the process.

How we store the sensory inputs – quickly, thoroughly and efficiently. Same rule applies when we need to retrieve the information from the memory – again quickly, thoroughly and efficiently. How we interpret the stimulus while listening, seeing, tasting, smelling and touching and pass them onwards / outwards to / from the memory locations decides the integrity and fullness of the basics in the knowledge process. (here we are not considering the role of emotions to colour the process with biases)
Clarity and sincerity of purpose, attention, concentration are some of the factors which also influence the effectiveness. Just for example we take commonly known listening process – in reality it includes hearing with full absorption, listening with differentiation and understanding to give integrity while storing what is heard. That is why, we usually observe, students in a class or listeners of a music concert, employees in an organization eventually end up with different levels of satisfaction.
While we are listening, it is not the ear which does that job as it just absorbs the signals and passes on to the nerves for onward transmission. Then it goes to short term memory where the concerned associations for the new stimuli are identified and once the ways and locations are identified for storage the input is stored. Any deviation in hearing, evaluating and deciding the associations can take away effectiveness and efficiency of the process. Our full fledged study on brain has gone into more details of this aspect.

As we have seen while dealing with subconscious, conscious human mind usually focuses attention to stimuli’s relevance to the perceived utility by the conscious mind. When the relevance not so strong conscious mind has tendency to ignore the so called irrelevant. So this input is not available for thought process in conscious manner.

The subconscious has an ability to absorb such “ignored and irrelevant” inputs and create a space for them in the system – permanent memory storage. Naturally, these sources are available only when accessed by subconscious. Majority of human population has used subconscious power very sparingly – may be under emergencies and impossible conditions. Our conscious ego just does not feel it necessary to appeal the subconscious for a contribution.
The vary purpose of memory management is to help brain to think for solving problems. Here we have define “problem” more liberally. Any action that invokes brain’s capabilities should be treated as a “problem”; then story telling is a problem and reminiscing in memories is a problem and how to discipline a errant kid is also a problem. Problem solving as such a equally deeper subject like that of brain, however, it will be sufficient to say that the challenges in this world has kept human spirits alive and prospering only due to this ability of human brain and memory system. All the successes and failures have the roots in the commissions or omissions of this discipline. Infinite number of ongoing challenges has been motivating human beings to seek better ways in handling the demanding situations.

Objectively looking at the world tells us that each and every problems that was identified is solved somewhere by someone and there is nothing new as such; but here finding the problem solver is also a problem.

Creating new ideas is again a similar process of thinking and problem solving; however, here the problem is perceived one to seek a different solution or adding new values to an existing process. Finding new utilities of the existing product or cost reduction, quality improvements are all examples of this demand on brain’s abilities. Even this initiative of “individual capability development” is a new idea. Everybody is capable of this ability and such abilities can be acquired with conscious efforts for better results, prosperity and satisfaction.
